How do you help rather than hinder your reader’s eye

I found a very interesting and useful article titled Pulling Your Reader In over at North x East. The article cover subjects like:

  • Text legibility
  • Use Pullquotes
  • Use Images
  • Vary your text
  • Small columns of text

I fully agree on the importance of avoiding small text size, I find that annoying and often leave sites that are a strain on the eyes. Pullquotes is something I have never used but I will have a look at that.

The final advice is to look to printed materials for inspiration:

Getting a reader involved with text has been a mainstay issue in print design for a very long time and magazines and newspapers in particular are very good at it. If you are looking for ideas about layout and how to present your material, they are an excellent reference for what to do to engage your reader, so get off your computer and pick up a paper tomorrow!

Why wait until tomorrow, get a paper today. I enjoy reading magazines but have actually not considered bringing visual ideas from there to my blogs.
