The Life Coaching Handbook: Everything You Need to Be an Effective Life Coach is written by Curly Martin. The subtitle is a mouthful but I like the book and it really covers a lot. It is a book I will go back to for reference, to refresh my knowledge and to find new views on life coaching.

This complete guide to life coaching reveals what life coaching IS, how to coach yourself and others effectively and how to create and sustain a successful coaching practice. Leading you through a comprehensive programme of Advanced Life Coaching Skills, it contains key NLP-based techniques that include State Control, Rapport-building, Spiral Coaching, Meta-programs, Meta-languages and The Milton Model.

Here are some qoutes from the book that stuck in my mind:

Life coaching concentrates on the person’s whole life instead of just one area.

Life coaching is a holistic process that has the power to balance and harmonize life.

The book also lists some elevator pitches or openings. I think this one says a lot: Life coaching can seriously change your life..

See the book at AdLibris (Sweden).

Today I got my diploma as proof of finishing the coach training at CoachCompagniet in Malmö. This means I am a professional coach. Each of us did a 15 minutes coaching session which should cover the coaching core competencies. This was done before two certified coaches who were judging us.

The coach training is accredited by ICF and had sixtynine hours of lectures, training in the eleven coach core competencies, individual coaching sessions, homework and practice clients. The course schedule was two days a month for four months, August to November, plus the diploma day. Between the modules we had our practice clients, homework and our individual coaching sessions. It has taken a lot of time and energy but it was well worth it.

In my About-page it says that coaching is one of the core topics for this blog. Anyone checking the Coaching-category will notice that at present there are few posts. This will change in the future though.

I have over the years coached friends and workmates. Now it is time to get serious which means I saw a need to learn the basics of professional coaching. This month I started a course at CoachCompagniet (Sweden). The course is two days a month for four months and then a diploma day. Course content is based on ICF coaching core competencies. Once I get the diploma I can work towards the next level, to become a certified coach according to ICF.

I have had the first two days of the course a week ago, I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot too.

These are her four tips:
1. Talk to an imaginary coach.
2. Ask yourself better questions.
3. Pretend to give advice to someone else.
4. Believe in your ability to make positive change in your life.

I think the last one is the key to change. As Penelope puts it, “believing in yourself is half the battle”.
